Festivals & Special Events
We mark the church year with times of reflection, celebration and quiet journeying with God to which everyone is welcome.
The week’s leading up to Christmas start the Christian year and provide a season of reflection that we know as Advent. The highlights of this season are:
Christingle: Children love this service, in which they make their own Christingle, as we reflect on everything Jesus came to do.
Crib: Children are invited to join the traditional nativity scene in nativity fancy dress.
9 Lessons and Carols: A traditional service based around nine Bible readings interspersed with Christmas carols.
Midnight Mass: A traditional reflective service heralding the Christ child.
Christmas Day Celebration: An opportunity to celebrate the birth of Christ on this special day.
Easter is the culmination of the story of Jesus. Beginning with Ash Wednesday, we walk through the days of Lent and repentance, remembering the sacrifice of Jesus upon the cross on Good Friday, and celebrating the risen Christ on Easter morning. Key services of this season are:
Ash Wednesday Service: We begin Lent by being marked in ash with the sign of the cross at this reflective service with communion.
Maundy Thursday Service: We remember Jesus sharing the Last Supper with his disciples. The congregation optionally have their feet or hands washed by the clergy.
Good Friday: We undertake a Walk of Witness With Churches Together in Leatherhead pausing for bible readings and prayers along the way. In the afternoon we hold a quiet and thoughtful Easter Vigil service.
Easter Morning: The church is filled with flowers and we celebrate the empty tomb.
Other Special Events
Celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, it is a time for us all to recognise the importance of those who have cared for and ‘mothered’ us throughout our lives.
We like to give flowers to all the ladies in church on this day.
The first Sunday in October traditionally marks the arrival of the harvest.
We decorate the church and gifts brought to this service are donated to the Foodbank.
Service of Remembrance
The Civic Service of Remembrance, organised by the Royal British Legion on Remembrance Sunday, is conducted by our clergy team.
This service is now usually held at the War Memorial in North Street.
Service of Memories
This is a quiet, reflective service using music, readings and silence, in which we remember dear ones whom we love, but see no longer.
Names of your loved one can be read out at this service (close to All Souls Day in November) if you provide their name in advance.
